The twenties produced another group of funny men who were fresh and original. Their antics delight us even today. Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton both worked for Mack Sennett and Charlie Chaplin who were still producing pictures. Laurel and Hardy, also part of the group, came from the Hal Roach Studio, Sennett's rival. Roach saw the humor of coupling a skinny guy with a fat one; each with an entirely different personality. Briefly, their technique consisted of a series of problems that snowballed into a dramatic and hilarious climax. Harold Lloyd, a Sennett player as was Chaplin, was of slight stature but his was an up-beat and optimistic attitude, unlike Chaplin's, with an ability to achieve his ends. He was a physical comedian, who was way ahead of his time. Buster Keaton was closer to Chaplin's style than any of the other comics. His constant awareness of the individual against the background of society and the insight he showed in dealing with it made him, like Chaplin, a most engaging, thoughtful comic. His most laudable feature was his deadpan reaction to the chaos around him.
