Camp Kilpatrick

Camp Kilpatrick is a Los Angeles correctional facility for teenage boys ages 12 to 18. It is located in the Malibu mountains on Encinal Road two miles west of Kanan Dune Road. We work weekly with incarcerated young men by videotaping an improvisational acting class. In the class, we videotape the boys practicing such things as mock job interviews, responding to confrontations non-violently, basic social responsibility, and basic behavior. It could be called a "charm school" for gang members. We also spend a portion of our time in group discussions on how to avoid returning to the correctional system. The need for help is great as over 70% of all the boys in camp return to the correctional system in the future. The majority of the boys we work with come from very unfortunate circumstances, without fathers in the home and with most mothers away at work, so we stay in contact with many of our boys after they are released. We have many success stories of boys who have gotten jobs and many have gone on to college.

The Camp has a need for volunteers and support in a number of other programs and it could really use a library.

Up to 100 incarcerated teens are confined for an average of one year in the camp and live in dormitories.
